Masticatory and Respiratory Rehabilitation in Barcelona — when the mouth affects everything else

Biological dentistry · Over 35 years in Sant Gervasi-Galvany

Do you get frequent headaches? Do you clench your teeth at night? Do you wake up tired even after sleeping? Sometimes the root of all that is in the mouth.

Masticatory and respiratory rehabilitation, or MRR, is an approach that treats the mouth for what it is: the gateway to the body. Not just the teeth — also the jaw, the muscles, breathing and rest.

What is Masticatory and Respiratory Rehabilitation?

The name may sound technical, but the idea is simple: there are people who bite badly, breathe through the mouth, clench the jaw or have the tongue in an incorrect position. Sometimes they have been like this for years without knowing it. And that has consequences that go far beyond the mouth.

MRR is a biological dentistry protocol that works to restore balance in the basic oral functions: chewing, swallowing and breathing. Through specific exercises, oral devices and clinical follow-up, the patterns that are causing the problem are corrected.

It's not a treatment for the mouth. It's a treatment that starts in the mouth and improves the functioning of the whole body.

MRR is part of our approach to general dentistry: treating the cause, not just the symptom.

What problems can MRR treat or improve?

Bruxism

Clenching or grinding the teeth, especially at night.

Chronic mouth breathing

Sleeping with the mouth open, feeling you don't rest well.

Sleep apnoea and snoring

Mild or moderate sleep apnoea and snoring.

Headaches or neck pain

Headaches and neck pain of jaw origin.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMJ)

Clicking or pain in the jaw.

Functional malocclusions

Bite problems that affect posture and the muscles.

Atypical swallowing

Swallowing in a way that creates tension in the jaw and neck.

The mouth and the body are more connected than you imagine

For decades, dentistry treated teeth in isolation. Cavities, fillings, extractions. Each problem, its specific solution.

Biological dentistry starts from a different premise: the mouth is not a sealed compartment. The way you chew, breathe and position your tongue influences your posture, your muscles, the quality of your sleep and how you oxygenate your body.

Nasal vs mouth breathing — why it matters

Breathing through the nose is not just an aesthetic matter. The air that enters through the nose is filtered, humidified and warmed before reaching the lungs. The nose produces nitric oxide, a vasodilator that improves oxygen absorption. Chronic mouth breathing, on the other hand, is associated with poorer rest, more fatigue, postural alterations and problems in facial development in children.

Chewing and posture — the chain few know about

The jaw is connected to the cervical spine through the muscles and the nervous system. A chronically tense jaw or an unbalanced bite can cause neck pain, tension headaches and contractures that seem unrelated to the mouth. Treating the cause instead of the symptom is exactly what MRR is about.

What is the MRR treatment step by step?

Every case is different. But the process always follows the same phases:

1

Complete initial assessment

We carry out a detailed examination: we analyse the bite, the position of the jaw, breathing patterns, tongue posture and the orofacial muscles. We use the intraoral scanner to obtain a precise record of the occlusion. With all that, we design the treatment plan.

2

Diagnosis and personalised plan

We explain what we have found and what we want to achieve. MRR is not a one-size-fits-all protocol — it adapts to each case. We detail how many sessions you'll need, which devices may be indicated and what part of the work depends on you at home.

3

Myofunctional exercises and re-education

An important part of the treatment is the exercises: techniques to retrain the orofacial muscles, correct the tongue's position, encourage nasal breathing and improve swallowing patterns. They are simple exercises done at home that have a real impact when done consistently.

4

Oral devices if indicated

In some cases — bruxism, mild apnoea, TMJ disorder — a night-time oral device can be useful. We make it to measure from the scanner records so it is precise and comfortable.

5

Follow-up and adjustment

MRR requires periodic follow-up to assess progress and adjust the plan if needed. The changes are gradual — they don't happen overnight — but when they consolidate, they last.

Why we do MRR at Clínica Dental Sancho

We have spent 35 years seeing that many problems that seem dental have a wider origin. Patients with bruxism who did not improve with a splint. Recurring headaches with no apparent cause. People who slept badly and didn't know the jaw had something to do with it. Incorporating MRR was not a marketing decision. It was a response to what we saw in the clinic.

Technology that helps diagnose better

We use an intraoral scanner to obtain precise records of the bite and occlusion. This lets us plan treatment with real data, not approximations.

An integral vision — the mouth within the body

We don't treat the symptom in isolation. We seek to understand why it's happening and act on the cause. If the problem comes from how you breathe or how you position your jaw when sleeping, that's what we need to work on.

The same team, with up-to-date training

Carlos added training in MRR and biological dentistry to the work Dr. Sancho has been doing for decades. It's not an external service — it's part of how we understand dentistry today.

Frequently asked questions about MRR in Barcelona

Is MRR for everyone?

It's not a routine treatment for everyone, but more people could benefit than it seems. If you have bruxism, frequent headaches, snoring, chronic fatigue or a sense that you don't rest well, it's worth having an assessment. At the first consultation we tell you whether MRR makes sense for your case.

How long does the treatment last?

It depends on the case and the goals. The first changes are usually noticed within a few weeks when the exercises are done regularly. Full consolidation can take several months. It's not a quick treatment, but the results last because it works on the cause, not the symptom.

Is it compatible with other dental treatments?

Yes, in most cases. In fact, MRR can complement other treatments: before orthodontics, after an oral rehabilitation or alongside a periodontics treatment. We assess it case by case.

Does it have to do with orthodontics?

They are related but not the same. Orthodontics moves the teeth. MRR works on the muscles and functional patterns. In many cases they are done together because the two things are connected: if the muscle patterns aren't corrected, orthodontic results can relapse over time.

Can children also have MRR?

Yes, and in children it can have a particularly important impact. Mouth breathing in childhood affects facial development and sleep quality. The earlier it's detected and worked on, the better the prognosis. If your child habitually breathes through the mouth or snores, it's worth checking. We also do paediatric dentistry.

How much does MRR treatment cost in Barcelona?

It depends on the diagnosis and the treatment plan. We provide a detailed quote at the first visit, in writing, before starting anything. Contact us for an assessment with no commitment.

If anything you've read sounds familiar, it's worth talking about

Many people come to this clinic after years of headaches, poor rest or bruxism for which they could find no explanation. Sometimes the answer was in the jaw.

At Clínica Dental Sancho we do the first assessment with no commitment. We listen, examine and tell you honestly whether MRR can help you.
